The act of ‘spiking’ has become an increasingly troublesome issue in some parts of South Africa, as petty thugs target motorists on busy highways late at night. This week, the Community Policing Forum (CPF) published the first guide to local hot-spots – where this crime occurs most often – in order to help South Africans avoid a traumatic experience.
What is spiking?
The new criminal trend sees spikes hidden in the road, with the express intention of bursting tyres and slowing cars down to rob the occupants. This anarchic behaviour is also supported by other petty crimes, such as rock-throwing and the placement of stones or ‘significant debris’ on the road. Both the N4 and N1 have been ‘significantly affected’.

Cape Town - Gun crime specialists in South Africa said illegal guns are they main culprits of gun violence in the country.
They were part of nearly 500 participants from 100 countries that gathered virtually for the 5th Interpol Firearm Forensics Symposium to focus on preventive crime and gun strategies.
The three-day symposium ending today, has been organised in co-operation with Ultra Electronics Forensic Technology, with ballistic experts, forensic scientists, law enforcement professionals, policy makers and public safety officials addressing the latest challenges facing law enforcement in firearm-related crime.
Police in Dowa District have arrested Village Headman (VH) Nyanda and a Community Policing Forum (CPF) member for allegedly killing a 53-year-old man.
Mponela Police spokesperson Kaitano Lubrino has confirmed the development while saying VH, whose real name is Kanthiti Tchale, 57 together with Stanley Davide, 41, committed the offense on April 10, 2021.
On the said day, the deceased, identified as Gredson Chimbonga, who hailed from Kankhwiri Village in Traditional Authority Chakhaza’s area in the district, got drunk and started harassing his in-law while demanding food.
According to Kaitano, the chief then ordered his accomplice to tie him up and lock him in a room for the entire night and to release him the following morning but it was discovered he had wounds around his elbow and the wrist joints.
Lesbian activists march to Khayelitsha police station over treatment of rape victims

Cape Town - Member of Free Gender, a lesbian organisation based in Khayelitsha marched to Harare police station on Wednesday to highlight what it said was an unfair treatment of rape survivors in Khayelitsha police stations.
The organisation demanded the police station to give full information to survivors when they open cases, transportation of rape victims in the evening after medical checks to avoid sleeping at Thuthuzela centre, waiting for detectives.
They also demanded the investigating officers to meet survivors in the Harare police station where the cases are opened.
