Image: 123RF/Nico Smit The male baboon that has been on the loose in Johannesburg, named Jeffrey, has been recaptured and released into the mountains in Polokwane. The baboon had been spotted wandering around parts of the city over the past week. There was a sighting of him crossing Ontdekkers Road near Florida Veterinary Hospital and another on the roof of Life Flora Clinic in Roodepoort. Founder of Community Led Animal Welfare (Claw) Cora Bailey said the baboon was captured on Friday.

Baily told The Citizen on Monday the baboon will be released to the wild to join the other baboons “in a few days”. “[Jeffrey] will be released up on the mountain where other wild baboons live and he can integrate into one of those troops once he has acclimatised to the new surroundings,” she said. The baboon was reportedly first spotted moving from the Quellerina area in Roodepoort towards Roosevelt Park in Randburg. Then from there, spotters followed his movements into the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens in Emmarentia, and then into Parktown. Multiple reports and sightings flooded local community Facebook pages last weekend after a baboon was spotted in Northcliff and Emmarentia on Saturday and Sunday. Animal welfare group Claw’s (Community Led Animal Welfare) Cora Baily said in a Facebook post last week that “it is not easy to trap and relocate these animals, but we have been successful in many cases. We rely on residents to give us sightings, including time and location pin.”
