After the very worst of years, the very best among us – from frontline health staff to key community volunteers and charity workers – have been recognised in The Queen’s 2021 New Year Honours. Here we spotlight some of the deserving stars that Prime Minister Boris Johnson applauds as “an inspiration to us all”.
Last year brought to the fore a new breed of community champions… including those working in the NHS to treat coronavirus patients, scientists developing effective vaccines and key workers keeping essential services operating.
These “ordinary people” who continue to go above and beyond have been recognised for sterling work delivered in extraordinary circumstances.

1 year since medical experts first warned of a novel coronavirus
On December 30, 2019, a minute before midnight, the global medical community received a notice warning of a then-unidentified viral pneumonia.
LOS ANGELES - More than 2,900 U.S. health care workers have died in the COVID-19 pandemic since March, Kaiser Health News (KHN) reported on Dec. 23.
The grim milestone comes nearly a year after the global medical community first received an alert about an unidentified cluster of a pneumonia-like illness that would later come to be known as the deadly coronavirus.

In an effort to provide a “blueprint” to other hospitals needing additional space to treat patients with COVID-19, one New York-based team published an outline of how they converted their cath labs to intensive care unit (ICU) space and back again.
“By the time the surge was spreading across the Midwest, with reports of parking garages being converted to field hospitals, California running out of ICU beds, and a second wave spreading across Europe, it felt absolutely imperative that we write [this paper],” senior author Anna Bortnick, MD, PhD, MSc (Jack D. Weiler Hospital, Bronx, NY), told TCTMD in an email.

The Brigham and Women s Hospital released a comprehensive app of all of their COVID-19 protocols. This app joins a growing list of guidelines and protocols from Johns Hopkins (via the Relief Central and Hopkins ABX Guide apps), WHO, Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM), National Institutes of Health (NIH), and others.
MyDirectives.com first launched its companion app for iOS in 2015. Their website and app can be used separately, but ideally, they should be used together. The website discusses the goals of create, update, and share. The app allows the user to digitally sign the plan; make a video of your wishes; use photos and videos to confirm your identity; share the Advance Care plan with others via email, text, and QR reader; and show on the iPhone lock screen!
