2020 represented an extremely turbulent year for the motoring industry. Total new car sales by more than 29 per cent, with registrations dropping by 1.63 million during the year as a result of a myriad of issues.
However, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has released a list of the most popular cars for the year, showcasing the buying trends in what has been an extremely testing year. Here’s how things have shaped up.

It’s little surprise to find the Ford Fiesta topping this list, given that it’s one of the UK’s most beloved small cars. Offering excellent value for money and a surprisingly involving driving experience, the Fiesta really is exceptionally well-rounded.

Battery electric vehicle (BEV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) registrations in the UK hit record highs in 2020.
That’s according to a report by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), which suggests BEV and PHEVs together accounted for more than one-in-ten registrations in 2020, compared to around one-in-30 in 2019.
According to the figures, demand for BEVs soared by 185.9% to 108,205 units, while registrations of plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) rose 91.2% to 66,877 vehicles.

Six businesses received Regional Dealer of the Year awards. These were: Pearson of Wemyss Bay (Renfrewshire); Luscombe Suzuki Leeds (West Yorkshire); Ludlow Motors Suzuki (Shropshire); Newmans Suzuki (Hampshire); Sportif Suzuki (Oxfordshire); and Tracks of Exeter (Devon).
