Car makers face very tough conditions as up to 30% of workers self-isolate

Car makers face ‘very tough’ conditions as up to 30% of workers self-isolate Car production is being hit by staff shortages (Peter Byrne/PA) Up to 30% of workers in some automotive companies are self-isolating, adding to the “very tough” conditions facing the industry, it has been revealed. The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) said factories built 69,097 cars last month, the worst June total since 1953 apart from Covid-affected June last year. Staff shortages caused by workers having to self-isolate, coupled with a global chip shortage, hit production, said the SMMT. The industry has faced a “turbulent” six months, with the pandemic, new trading rules with Europe and supply issues causing ongoing challenges, the society said.

Car production is at 68-year low as pingdemic threatens to throttle the industry, bosses warn

Farmers and growers are struggling to harvest crops because pickers are being required to self-isolate. In theory, critical workers in the food supply chain will be given an exemption to quarantine rules, however industry leaders have said the system is mired in complexity and confusion. Tom Bradshaw, vice-president of the National Farmers Union, said there is real frustration because growers do not know if they will have sufficient staff to pick crops, such as peas. When they re ready to harvest we ve got to be able to harvest them. we have got businesses now that are under real pressure because people are having to self-isolate, he said.

UK car production slumps to lowest June level in almost 70 years

Last modified on Wed 28 Jul 2021 19.03 EDT The number of cars rolling off UK production lines last month slumped to the lowest June level in almost 70 years, as car manufacturers were hit by shortages of both staff and semiconductors. The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) said just over 69,000 cars were produced in UK car plants last month, the lowest June total since 1953, although this excludes June 2020 when factories were slowly getting back up to speed after the first lockdown. The global shortage in semiconductor chips as a result of the pandemic has hit car production, and could mean 100,000 fewer cars are built in the UK this year than previously forecast.
