The transport secretary, Grant Shapps, has revealed carmakers told him in a recent meeting that a “more realistic” target date would be 2035. The push back came in meeting towards the end of March with the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), which gathered key stakeholders from vehicle manufacturers to raise their concerns on meeting zero emissions targets. Shapps, who was co-chairing the 2nd Zero Emission Vehicle Transition council, said: “Many of the manufacturers felt the DfT needed to set an end date for sale of vehicles with internal combustion engines, with many suggesting a realistic phase out date could be 2035.

It has set out how a vehicle with an automated lane keeping system (ALKS) could legally be used by a driver not paying attention, as long as there is no evidence to challenge the ability of it to be used autonomously.
