After a difficult year for Illinois police, officers from around the state gathered at the Illinois Police Officers Memorial outside the state Capitol on Thursday to remember those who died in the line of duty.
Sixteen Illinois officers were killed in the line of duty between 2019 and 2020. COVID-19 killed several of those officers in 2020. In 2019, multiple officers were killed in traffic accidents or by gunfire. Six other officers who lost their lives in previous years also were honored. I wanted to say how happy I am to be here. But that seems inappropriate to use that word. I d be really happy if we didn t need to be here today. If there were no more names to be added to the wall, said Illinois Treasurer Mike Frerichs.

Timothy and Renee Johnson were the victims of a horrific crime as the couple carried out chores for Renee s 95-year-old mother on Saturday, May 1.
Elijah Prince, 28, then approached Timothy and asked if the pastor wanted to buy something, Fox32 reported on Wednesday.

As Renee rushed over to help her husband, she was also reportedly attacked.

The woman known as the “serial stowaway,” accused of sneaking through airport security and onto flights, will remain in custody as her latest cases are pending, a Cook County judge ruled Monday.
CHICAGO â More than 2,600 people have been in custody at the Cook County Jail or at home on electronic monitoring for more than a year as a massive backlog of felony cases has piled up at the Cook County Circuit Court.
The backlog is a direct result of restrictions that Chief Judge Timothy Evans put in place last year to limit the spread of Covid-19. Evans postponed all jury trials and scaled back most court operations. Even when court cases picked up again on Zoom, technical difficulties and some defendants lack of access to computers or internet delayed cases further, and some proceedings could only be done in person.
