COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO)– Deputies say an inmate at the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center is under investigation after he started a fire with a lighter in his cell on Monday night. Authorities say 23-year-old Markel Anthony Atkinson, who is is being housed at the detention center for a murder charge, also got into an altercation with two officers who were trying to restrain him. According to deputies, Atkinson has been charged with two counts of contraband, two counts of assault and one count of arson.
Authorities say that detention center officers were able to put out the fire before the Sumter Fire Department arrived at the scene. Officers say inmates in the housing area were evacuated due to the smoke, but later returned without issue.

COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO)– The Sumter Police Department says a 23-year-old man is in custody after his infant child died from injuries officials deemed suspicious. On Sunday, authorities say the infant’s mother left the 11-week-old baby with his father, Dashun Malik Canty, and went to an appointment. When she returned, investigators say she found the infant unresponsive but alive. Police say the mother took the baby to Prisma Health Tuomey before he was transferred to a Columbia hospital where the family learned he had died.
According to the Sumter County Coroner’s Office, the baby suffered a head injury that they consider suspicious. Investigators say an autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.

SUMTER, S.C. A Sumter father is in custody after his baby boy died.
The 23-year-old Sumter man and father of the infant, Dashun Malik Canty, is facing charges.
According to the Sumter Police Department the mother of the 11-week-old boy told police she left the baby with his father while she went to an appointment Sunday.
When she returned to her room at a Broad Street hotel, the baby was alive but unresponsive.
She and a family member then drove the baby to Prisma Health Tuomey where the baby later was transferred to a Columbia hospital where the family learned he had died.

SUMTER COUNTY, S.C. (WIS) - A 23-year-old Kershaw man has been arrested and charged with second-degree domestic violence following an incident on December 2.
Rashad Stover used a metal rod of a lamp to choke a woman during an argument, according to the Sumter County Sheriffâs Office. Authorities said there were three children in the home during the altercation.
Stover was taken to the Sumter County Sheriffâs Office Detention Center following his arrest on December 3.

Missing woman last seen leaving Sumter found safe
According to the report, Bianca Isom, 31, was last seen leaving the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center on Winkles Road at about 10 a.m. on November 11.

SUMTER COUNTY, S.C. The Sumter County Sheriff s Office says a woman who d been missing for nearly a month has been found safe.
Officers said Thursday morning they d located 31-year-old Bianca Isom. They did not provide additional details on her discovery.
According to deputies, Isom was last seen leaving the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center on Winkles Road at about 10 a.m. on November 11. She was seen wearing a gray hoodie, blue jeans, black shoes, and she was carrying a green and black bookbag.
