Mentally exhausted but hopeful due to the availability of COVID-19 vaccines, Yankton’s front-line medical workers talk about the fight that, for at least one of Yankton’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) nurses, quickly became personal. Since the spring, the ICU at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital (ASHH) in Yankton has basically become the COVID unit, Carrie Heine — a nurse for 41 years, of which 30 have been spent in the ASHH ICU — told the Press & Dakotan. “I don’t think the community realized that we were already treating COVID patients back in April,” she said. “That was when we started hearing the stories about health-care workers dying. It became very real.”

COVID Update for Dec 24: South Dakota Reports 41 Deaths, Including 2 In Yankton Co

South Dakota recorded 41 new deaths related to COVID-19 — including two in Yankton County and one in Charles Mix County — in Thursday’s daily update from the South Dakota Department of Health (DOH). In Nebraska, 40 new deaths were reported by the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) late Wednesday. Meanwhile, Yankton received its first shipment of the Moderna COVID vaccine and saw its first injections on the morning of Christmas Eve. South Dakota’s new deaths raised the state toll to 1,430, of which 484 have occurred in December, an increase of 51%. The state also reported 500 new infections. Yankton County’s deaths raised its toll to 25, of which 16 have been recorded in December. Seven deaths have been reported in the last week.

1945-2020 William N. “Bill” Jennewein, 75, of Yankton, South Dakota, passed away on Friday, Dec. 11, 2020, at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton from complications of COVID-19 virus. A private family Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, Dec. 16, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Yankton with the Rev. Fr. Larry Regynski as celebrant. Burial was at Sacred Heart Cemetery with military honors accorded by Ernest Bowyer VFW Post 791 Honor Guard and SDARNG Honor Guard. Bill was born April 19, 1945, in Olympia Washington to William P. and Evelyn (Bruning) Jennewein, both of Breda, Iowa. After his father’s discharge from the Army the family returned to Breda, where Bill attended elementary school and graduated from St. Bernard Catholic High School in 1963.
