A 21-year-old man was shot in the chest early Monday morning at a residence in northeast Hughes County by a 19-year-old man who used a handgun and is an acquaintance, according to the investigation so far, Hughes County Sheriff Darin Johnson said in a news release.
Johnson said a 911 call came in at 5:46 a.m., Monday, Dec. 14, made by a 19-year-old woman who witnessed the shooting.
By the time law enforcement officers got to the scene, the shooter had left in a vehicle.
The victim was taken by ambulance to Avera St. Maryâs Hospital in Pierre then airlifted to Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls âwith serious injuries,â according to Johnson.

Her funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 15, 2020, at the Apostolic Christian Church in Lester, IA. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be Monday, December 14 th from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Apostolic Christian Church Fellowship Hall in Lester without the family present.
Social distancing guidelines will be followed, and masks are strongly encouraged during the visitation and funeral service.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) Avera announces plans to build a new four-story wing at the Avera Behavioral Health Center in Sioux Falls.
The expansion will add more capacity for children and adolescents, residential addiction care for youth, 24/7 psychiatric urgent care and partial hospitalization space.
The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust is assisting the project with a $13 million grant.
It includes an $8 million gift and a $5 million matching portion.
