Subscriber only PARAMEDICS are urging holidaymakers to be much more water safe after a drowning spike as lifesavers warn about dangers of inflatables at the beach. Queensland Ambulance Service senior operations supervisor Grace Elliott said 100 extra paramedics and supervisors were rostered on for New Year s Eve-related incidents. We (saw) a number of incidents in line with intoxication, assaults, falls, that sort of thing, she said. What we have seen as an ambulance service over the past three days and something that is of increasing concern to us is the number of drownings.

FRANCE-WEATHER-FLOODS
Sometimes you have to do whatever it takes to survive. David Simpson, age 64, says he was on his boat off the coast of Queensland, Australia yesterday (December 30th) when he was knocked into the water by a large wave as he tried to secure a rope to the vessel’s dinghy. Simpson said his boat sped off with his dog onboard, as the motor was still running. So he swam about a half mile to a water beacon and waited for a large enough wave to push him high enough to reach the beacon’s ladder. In the meantime, his boat was discovered by another boater, which alerted authorities. The boat ran aground, and Simpson’s dog was rescued by Surf Life Saving Queensland personnel. Simpson was spotted by a helicopter after holding onto the beacon for about three hours. Rescuers say he was found about 1.6 miles from his vessel and was lucky he was able to get to that beacon.
