LOUISVILLE, Ky. Any resolution to the contract dispute between Churchill Downs Inc. and the racetrack s valets won t come before the Kentucky Derby race, as officials from the two sides did not come together Friday for mediation talks.
As of Friday evening, the valets, who are responsible for saddling the horses and preparing them to race, had not decided whether to strike during the 147th Run for the Roses.
The valets, represented by SEIU Local 541, are critical to the success and safety of the Kentucky Derby operation, according to the Service Employees International Union.
The 13 valets are paid about $16 an hour for their work at the Louisville track and Northern Kentucky s Turfway Park, which Churchill Downs also owns, according to the union.
