Russian opposition leader Navalny calls for sanctions on FIE President Usmanov

Wednesday, 20 January 2021 The President of the International Fencing Federation (FIE), Alisher Usmanov, has been named on a list of individuals jailed Russian politician Alexei Navalny wants Western Governments to sanction. Navalny ally Vladimir Ashurkov published a list of eight individuals Navalny wants to see punished by the international community, saying that the West must sanction the decision makers and the people who hold their money if penalties against Russia are to be effective. On Sunday (January 17), Navalny was detained upon returning to Russia and remains in custody. Prosecutors say the leading Russian opposition figure violated the terms of a suspended sentence for embezzlement, but Navalny s supporters have dismissed these charges as being politically motivated.

Online fencing referee training initiative praised by participants Wednesday, 16 December 2020 The European Fencing Confederation (EFC) has concluded its first phase of its virtual referee seminar initiative, receiving positive feedback from those who attended. This project was led by EFC vice-president Nikolay Mateev and EFC secretary-general Jack Slupski, who attended all the seminars. Both are now looking to further develop the project in 2021. The pandemic has made 2020 a very difficult year for sports including fencing, said Slupski. Everyone has had to find ways to make the most of the situation. By embracing technology, we were willing to support our referees at a time when competitive fencing has not been possible.
