Graduate School alumna receives humanitarian award

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State Graduate School alumna Amelia Henry has received the Graduate School Alumni Society Humanitarian Award. This award recognizes an alumnus/alumna holding a graduate degree from Penn State who has made a positive societal impact on the welfare of humankind beyond the responsibilities of one’s profession.
Henry is a senior scientist at the International Rice Research Institute in the Philippines. She has been described as “a highly creative and dynamic scientist working at the forefront of global food security to develop rice varieties with greater drought tolerance.”

HÀ NỘI Agencies in Việt Nam and international partners have been working together to seek effective measures to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases in rice production in the country.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development last week held the first workshop on the implementation of Việt Nam s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) in the rice sector.
Aiming to set priorities for NDC implementation in rice production, the workshop highlighted different NDC scenarios to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while gaining economic, social, and environmental benefits sustainably.

Today, 1 April 2021, the FAO Director-General, QU Dongyu, had a virtual meeting, with Dr Jim Godfrey, Chair Board of Trustees of International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) and Dr Jean Balié, Director-General, (IRRI). The Director-General welcomed the IRRI’s new Director General and expressed his appreciation for FAO and IRRI’s long-standing partnership and work on the ground.
During the meeting Dr Godfrey and Dr Balié shared with the Director-General their vision and plans for IRRI in the context of a reformed Consortium of International Agricultural Research Centres (CGIAR). They informed him of how they are looking at building science and evidence based solutions to transform the rice sector, through closer cooperation and interaction with all stakeholders (from smallholder farmers, producers, policy makers to the private sector).
