Sushiman/Getty Images The past year has been a terrible one for the standardized testing industry, as colleges have shifted to test-optional policies and test cancellations have plagued administrations. But even as colleges have gone test optional (or test blind), most have still required foreign students to take a test to demonstrate their English proficiency. For many years, the primary test used for admission to colleges in the United States was the Test of English as a Foreign Language, known by its acronym TOEFL. But during the year of the pandemic, an alternative shorter and less costly offered by Duolingo has gained market share. It was around before the pandemic but has taken off during the year of COVID-19.

British Council to train nurses Updated: Updated: Share Article AAA The government has entered into an agreement with the British Council to train 10,000 nurses in English language to clear the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) examination for them to be eligible for employment opportunities across the world. Principal Secretary, Higher Education, Usha Titus and Director, British Council South India, Janaka Pushpanathan signed the agreement in the presence of Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac and Higher Education Minister K.T. Jaleel here on Friday. The training, conducted under the Additional Skill Acquisition Programme, will have the council imparting lessons in a blended learning format comprising both synchronous or live and asynchronous training.

The government, through AP Non-Resident Telugu Society (APNRTS), plans to help them find suitable jobs. “We plan technical trade job melas where clients from the Gulf will be invited to interview and assess local candidates for suitable jobs,” said Venkat S. Medapati, president of the society. “Preference will be given to the returning migrants who already have experience of working in the Gulf and those with upgraded skills,” he added.
