COVID-19 proved 2020 was truly the Year of the Nurse

COVID-19 proved 2020 was truly the Year of the Nurse New Mexico Lt. Governor Howie Morales When the World Health Organization (WHO) named 2020 as the ‘International Year of the Nurse’, it had no inkling of how true that would become. The designation was meant to honor the 200th anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale, a Victorian-era reformer of hospital care, and to raise recognition of the nursing profession.  Then the Coronavirus pandemic struck.  As the year draws to a close, we truly have learned how essential nurses are to everyone’s lives in 2020.  We must not forget it. Hospitalizations for COVID-19 infection across the U.S. have soared daily, setting new records for weeks on end.  More than 3,000 Americans are dying every day from the virus, and infected patients are stretching U.S. medical facilities to the breaking point.  In New Mexico the trends are no different.  ICU beds are full across the state.

Tralee nurse honoured for her work in Cork s Bons Secour

The Bon Secours Hospital in Cork has named a Tralee nurse as its top trainee of the year. Last week Sarah Quigley from Lisloose in Tralee was named as winner of the 2020 Josephine Potel Award during the annual thanksgiving Mass for graduate nurses which is held in the hospital chapel. Bon Secours Cork is well known as a leading training centre for nurses with courses provided in conjunction with the Catherine McAuley School of Nursing and Midwifery at neighbouring UCC. Some years ago the hospital s medical staff decided that the student nurses training and working at the hospital should be recognised for both their academic performance and their abilities on the wards.
