Marek Novák, of Xova Film, tells us what he thinks about the social importance and the future of documentaries
Why do you produce documentaries? Do you understand documentary film as an instrument of social and political change?
Marek Novák: I like to think that I am interested in producing films without choosing between fiction and documentary, because both can reflect on our reality to help us grasp it better.

I would be careful about understanding film as an instrument for promoting a social change. The world today is too big and complex to be suddenly and radically changed by something as delicate as a single film. Croatian producer
Ivan PeriÄ of Kazimir, selected for the 2021 Emerging Producers programme, discussed his documentary projects and how heâs dealing with the current situation.
Why do you produce documentaries? Do you understand documentary film as an instrument of social and political change?

It captures moments that we live through and which are very short in time but these moments can later have an effect on moments that happen afterwards.

Agnieszka Skalska, of Koi Studio, one of the 2021 Emerging Producers, talks about her work and producing documentaries nowadays.
Why do you produce documentaries? Do you understand documentary film as an instrument of social and political change?
Agnieszka Skalska: I produce documentaries because the stories written by life move me a lot. I love discovering new subjects and digging deep to find the second and third bottom in every person and every story. I am convinced that documentaries can make a change, like drops that drill into a rock. I like making documentaries because I like small teams where everyone knows what to do and works with a sense of mission and achieving a common goal.
