Croatian producer
Ivan PeriÄ of Kazimir, selected for the 2021 Emerging Producers programme, discussed his documentary projects and how heâs dealing with the current situation.
Why do you produce documentaries? Do you understand documentary film as an instrument of social and political change?
Ivan PeriÄ: I like art in general because it helps us realize we are not alone and that there is someone out there who feels and sees the world in a similar way like we do. Documentaries are special because it is an art form about the art of life. It captures moments that we live through and which are very short in time but these moments can later have an effect on moments that happen afterwards.
Spanish producer
Jorge Caballero, of Gusano Films, discusses the role of documentaries in our current society after being selected for the 2021 Emerging Producers.
Emerging Producers: Why do you produce documentaries? Do you understand documentary film as an instrument of social and political change?
Jorge Caballero: Especially because of my interest in the socio-political realities of the different places where we film. From public health in Colombia to civil disobedience in Spain. We believe in a cinema that can contribute socially and that is committed to the realities it shows. The other reason is aesthetic, we are interested in experimenting with forms and formats to understand the possibilities of language.

One of the 2021 Emerging Producers, Czech producer
Marek Novák, of Xova Film, tells us what he thinks about the social importance and the future of documentaries
Why do you produce documentaries? Do you understand documentary film as an instrument of social and political change?
Marek Novák: I like to think that I am interested in producing films without choosing between fiction and documentary, because both can reflect on our reality to help us grasp it better.

I would be careful about understanding film as an instrument for promoting a social change. The world today is too big and complex to be suddenly and radically changed by something as delicate as a single film. But seeing it as a conversation starter, a contemplation which inspires and provokes a train of thoughts that perhaps leads to some kind of action â that is for sure.
