Russian dissident Alexei Navalny, the World Health Organisation and climate campaigner Greta Thunberg have joined Donald Trump among a list of expected nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize, according to a survey of Norwegian MPs who are eligible to propose candidates and who have a track record of successfully guessing the winner.
Ms Thunberg, Mr Navalny, and the WHO – for its Covax programme to secure fair access to Covid vaccines for poor countries – are likely frontrunners, research carried out by Reuters found. Nominations for the prestigious award close on Sunday.
The climate activist, Russian opposition leader and global health body are backed by Norwegian lawmakers, who have nominated the eventual laureate every year since 2014, with the exception of 2019.

OSLO Russian dissident Alexei Navalny, the World Health Organization (WHO) and climate campaigner Greta Thunberg are among those nominated for this year’s Nobel Peace Prize, all backed by Norwegian lawmakers who have a track record of picking the winner.
Thousands of people, from members of parliaments worldwide to former winners, are eligible to propose candidates. Nominations, which close on Sunday, do not imply an endorsement from the Nobel committee.
Norwegian lawmakers have nominated the eventual laureate every year since 2014, with the exception of 2019, said Henrik Urdal, Director of the Peace Research Institute Oslo. “The pattern from recent years is quite stunning.”

2020 was a year marked by the devastation of the still raging COVID-19 pandemic, but also by the extraordinary scientific achievement of record fast vaccine development and the prospect of the first pandemic in human history to be ended through vaccination. The risks associated with COVID-19 are unevenly distributed – by age, geographical location, socioeconomic status, and other demographic factors. Some of this unevenness is due to the biology of the virus, but some of it is a consequence of social and political inequalities. With various vaccines now approved and mass vaccination programs underway in a number of countries, these global inequalities and injustices are finding new expression in the unequal distribution of vaccines.
