Landmines Still Pose a Threat to Two Million Ukrainians [EN/RU/UK] Format Around 2 million people – roughly the population of Slovenia – are exposed to the threat of landmines and explosive remnants of war (ERW) in eastern Ukraine on both sides of the “contact line”. Ukraine ranks fifth in the world for civilian casualties as a result of landmines and ERW, and in top three for antivehicle landmine accidents. That makes the east of Ukraine one of the most mine-contaminated regions in the world. (Kyiv, 5 April 2021): On International Mine Awareness Day, the Humanitarian Coordinator in Ukraine Ms. Osnat Lubrani calls for the protection and safety of 2 million people in eastern Ukraine who face insecurity due to contamination from landmines and ERW. People there are risking their lives every day to access markets, schools, hospitals and farmland. UN Secretary-General Calls For Action To Rid The World Of Landmines

On April 4 th 2021, International Mine Awareness Day, the United Nations Secretary-General – António Guterres – urged States that have not acceded to join the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention. The Secretary-General also referred to the United Nations Charter and advocated “to complete the work: to survey, clear and destroy these deadly devices.” This message also emphasized how landmines act as a barrier to providing humanitarian aid and impede peaceful solutions. Further, the Secretary-General stated “Landmines, explosive remnants of war and improvised explosive devices disproportionally affect the vulnerable, the forcibly displaced, the dispossessed, and children” accentuating the negative impact of landmines on vulnerable populations.
