Jaali the black rhino calf will be taken to a new facility later this year where he will be paired with a female rhino for breeding.
The black rhino, a critically endangered species, was a landmark addition to Potter Park Zoo.
Only about 60 are living in accredited zoos across the US.
Potter Park Zoo is a longstanding partner with the International Rhino Foundation and Rhino Conservation.
The organization s communications director Christopher Whitlatch says black rhinos are what wildlife experts call âumbrella species.â

The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium has recently welcomed a 4-year-old greater one-horned rhino, who arrived on April 9, from the Center for Conservation of Tropical Ungulates, an Association of Zoos and Aquariums sustainability partner located in Florida.
Columbus Zoo animal care staff, along with a staff veterinarian, and facilities team members, traveled with Brian to ensure that he arrived safely.
Once listed as an endangered species, the greater one-horned rhino has seen a steady population increase thanks to strict government protection.
The zoo did not have Kipenzi s weight, but spokeswoman Morgan Purvis said mature females can weigh 4,000 to 6,000 pounds.
Kipenzi shares her habitat in the Plains of East Africa exhibit with two other southern white rhinos Gabriella, or Gabby, 26, and Archie, 51, who is the third-oldest male rhino in the world. A group of rhinos is called a crash. She may breed with Archie. However, due to his age we will explore artificial insemination options, Purvis said.
Also in the Plains of East Africa exhibit are greater kudu, East African gray crowned-cranes, Marabou stork and a North African ostrich.
Southern white rhinos, native to Sub-Saharan Africa, are the most prevalent of the five types of existing rhinoceros. They were near extinction in the late 19th century, with less than 100, but have since recovered to around 18,000 today because of careful protection and management, according to the zoo.
