France’s pivotal support of Taiwan
By Chang Sue-chung 張淑中
The Senate of France, a country with a long history of democracy, multiparty politics and a multicultural society, passed a resolution in support of Taiwan’s participation in international organizations. This is a significant, historic move not only for France, but also for the international community as a whole.
French media reported that the unanimous resolution was passed on May 6 in a vote of 304 to 0, with 19 abstentions. This is a rare event for the upper house of the French Parliament, indicating that there is a high degree of agreement among French senators and the French public about supporting Taiwan’s participation in international organizations.

The International Criminal Police Organisation, INTERPOL, is creating a new cybercrime operations desk with UK funding to boost the capacity of 49 African countries to fight cybercrime.
In a statement, the agency said the Africa desk will help shape a regional strategy to drive intelligence-led coordinated actions against cybercriminals and support joint operations.
Speaking at the CYBERUK conference in London, UK Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said: “We are working with like-minded partners, to make sure that the international order that governs cyber activity is fit for purpose.
INTERPOL Launches Digital Piracy Project
The International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) is launching a new five-year project to tackle digital piracy following a significant increase in the number of offenses.
According to INTERPOL, digital piracy has increased by more than 60 percent in some countries during the 12 months from April 2020 as millions of people have been confined due to the global health pandemic.
The new INTERPOL Stop Online Piracy (I-SOP) initiative will combat online piracy and crimes involving intellectual property rights infringement. Criminal networks that are successfully targeted will have their assets confiscated.
Under the initiative, law enforcement agencies will also work to identify and dismantle illegal online marketplaces where pirated content is streamed and sold.
“North Korea, Iran, Russia and China.” These states use digital technologies to
“sabotage and steal, or to control and censor,” he declared.
He went on to describe the UK and its Western allies as a
“force for good in the world” that always demonstrates
“respect for international law” and uses cyber capabilities only for defending citizens and safeguarding
“international collaboration.”
Raab also accused China and Russia of
“sheltering criminal gangs” on their territories, instead of prosecuting them, but failed to mention any such groups that might be operating from within the UK or allied nations.
“We can see this clash between authoritarian and democratic states playing out very directly, right now, in cyberspace,” he said, referencing a string of cyber-attacks on Western nations that have been blamed on Moscow and Beijing.
