The assault on jobs at Siemens Energy is coming to a head. On July 9, talks between the company, the IG Metall trade union and the works council broke down on the details of job cuts at German plants. The talks are now to continue within the framework of a conciliation board under an “impartial” chairman.
This means that IG Metall and the works council will hide behind the alleged neutrality of the chairman of the conciliation board in order to press ahead with the planned redundancies against the resistance of the workforce.
New Zealand nurses’ union cancels strike after pay offer
The New Zealand Nurses Organisation (NZNO) announced Friday that it had cancelled a strike notice for July 29, following talks with the country’s 20 District Health Boards (DHBs). Some 30,000 nurses and health care assistants struck on June 9, after rejecting a derisory pay offer of just 1.38 percent and voted for three further nationwide strikes on July 29, August 19 and September 9.

The DHBs’ original offer was a pay cut relative to inflation (which is 3.3 percent) and contained nothing to address the staffing crisis in hospitals. The Labour Party-led government has announced a three-year wage freeze for the majority of public employees, including healthcare workers and teachers. It is imposing severe austerity measures to make workers shoulder the burden of the economic crisis triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Spain’s Morenoite Izquierda Diario calls for “safe nightlife” as COVID-19 surges
Amid a massive resurgence of coronavirus cases in Spain, the Morenoite Workers’ Revolutionary Current (CRT), and its online publication Izquierda Diario, has launched a politically-criminal campaign encouraging youth to throw caution to the wind and pour back into nightclubs and bars.

Infection rates have surged in Spain, with daily cases more than quadrupling in two weeks. As of yesterday, the seven-day rolling average of cases was 24,049, compared to 3,574 a month ago, and more than at any point since mid-February. On July 15, Spain recorded 32,680 new cases of COVID-19, the most reported on any single day since the beginning of the pandemic in February 2020.
