(File Photo from FIBA) In a statement, Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque said the Inter-agency Task Force (IATF) for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases said the games, however, should be under a “bubble” arrangement. “The IATF approved the request of the Samahan Basketbol ng Pilipinas to host the [FIBA] Asia Cup Qualifiers in June 2021 under a ‘bubble-type’ setting in Clark, Pampanga, subject to health and safety protocols,” he said.

The IATF-MEID decision came from the Resolution No. 114 dated May 6 with the government approving the request of the SBP, led by its president Al Panlilio, to host the said event. “Approving the request of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas to host the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Asia Cup Qualifiers in June 2021 to be held under a “bubble-type” setting in Clark, Pampanga,” said in the resolution under section C.1.

SBP GILAS Pilipinas 3×3 team’s busy journey to the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament (OQT) has begun after it entered its training “bubble” at the weekend at the INSPIRE Sports Academy in Calamba, Laguna. For at least eight days, the three-a-side national team, composed of the country’s top players in the sport and Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) stalwarts, will try to work on their collective game for their OQT campaign happening from May 26 to 30 in Graz, Austria.

Tebogo Malope to direct upcoming Basketball Africa League docu-series

The Basketball Africa League (BAL), together with producer and distributor Fremantle, award-winning TRUE DETECTIVE producer Richard Brown and sports marketing company Infront, have teamed up to produce an original documentary series telling the story of the launch and inaugural season of the BAL, a new professional league featuring 12 club teams from across Africa tipping off Sunday, May 16 in Kigali, Rwanda. The series will be directed by South Africa’s very own director Tebogo Malope.     The BAL, a partnership between the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), marks the NBA’s first collaboration to operate a league outside of North America. The first BAL Finals will be held Sunday, May 30.
