Congo volcano leaves death and smoking wreckage, but major city spared

4 Min Read GOMA (Reuters) -A smoking trail of lava from a volcanic eruption covered hundreds of houses in eastern Congo on Sunday, leaving residents to pick gingerly through the wreckage for belongings and loved ones, though the flow halted just short of the city of Goma. Goma was thrown into panic on Saturday evening as Mount Nyiragongo, one of the world’s most active and dangerous volcanoes, erupted, turning the night sky an eerie red and sending a wall of orange lava downhill towards the lakeside city of about 2 million people. Army spokesman Guillaume Njike said 13 were killed fleeing the disaster, including nine in a traffic accident and four who tried to escape Munzenze prison in Goma.

IFRC seeks instant action to resolve COVID-19 vaccine crisis in Asia Xinhua 22 May 2021, 02:05 GMT+10 DHAKA, May 21 (Xinhua) Instant action is needed by governments and pharmaceutical companies to fix a COVID-19 vaccine supply crisis in Asia as countries run out of stocks while suffering grim record daily death tolls, a global humanitarian organization said Friday. According to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), Nepal and Bangladesh have run out of vaccines while India and Indonesia have both vaccinated around 3 percent of their populations. Apart from this, it said the Philippines has only fully vaccinated around 0.6 percent.
