Cyclone Tauktae Kills 12, Damages Hundreds of Homes in India

Indian authorities raced Monday to evacuate hundreds of thousands from the coast as powerful Cyclone Tauktae roared toward landfall.
Tauktae, with maximum sustained winds that were equivalent to the strength of a Category 3 hurricane, made landfall Monday in Gujarat state about 150 miles northwest of Mumbai.
Six people were killed in the state of Maharashtra because of the cyclone, the Press Trust of India news agency reported. Three sailors were missing after two boats sank, according to the Press Trust.
Over the weekend, rain from the storm killed six people in Kerala, Karnataka and Goa states, the Associated Press reported.

Ahmedabad: More than 200,000 people were evacuated from their homes in the Indian state of Gujarat and authorities shut ports and major airports as the most powerful cyclone in more than two decades made landfall in the state late on Monday, local time.
Rain intensified and several incidents of power outages were reported in the state as Cyclone Tauktae hit. Electricity pylons and trees were uprooted and buildings were damaged in coastal areas of Gujarat, state authorities said.

A powerful cyclone that emerged in the Arabian Sea has made landfall on India s western coast, hours after authorities evacuated hundreds of thousands of people and suspended COVID-19 vaccinations in one state.
Cyclone Tauktae, the most powerful storm to hit the region in more than two decades, came ashore in Gujarat state with heavy rain, a battering storm surge and sustained winds of up to 165km per hour, the India Meteorological Department said.
Forecasters warned of possible extensive damage from high winds, heavy rainfall and flooding in low-lying areas.
