New Delhi reported a record 24,000 coronavirus cases in one day and its leader warned of a grim battle ahead Saturday as major cities across India went into a weekend lockdown in a bid to curtail a nationwide pandemic surge.
With India now leading the world in the number of new cases more than two million in the past month the international Red Cross said the speed at which cases are rising across South Asia was truly frightening .
Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal said it was impossible to know when the virulent new surge would peak.

Japan, rising virus cases have stoked speculation that the Olympic Games - postponed last year due to the pandemic - could be cancelled.
Japan’s prime minister Yoshihide Suga, in his first meeting with US president Joe Biden, said his government was listening to experts and doing its “utmost” to prepare for the Tokyo games in July.

New Delhi led major cities across India into a weekend lockdown Saturday as the country confronts a fierce new coronavirus wave, with more than 230,000 fresh daily cases and families clamouring for drugs and hospital beds.
