Time is running out: urgent action needed to address humanitarian crisis in Tigray

Introduction
With the situation in Ethiopia’s northern Tigray region at a dangerous turning point, the international community has yet to take decisive action. Diplomatic, humanitarian, and human rights groups have increasingly spoken out, urging the Ethiopian government to allow relief workers to deliver adequate levels of emergency aid to the beleaguered population. Unfortunately, they have had little success.
More than 6 million people remain trapped in the fighting between Ethiopia’s military (ENDF), allied militia, and the Eritrean army (EDF) on one side, and the reconstituted rebel Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) on the other. An estimated 2.2 million people have been displaced by the conflict, of which some 61,000 have fled to Sudan, many with only the clothes on their backs. UNHCR Greece Cash Assistance Update (January 2021)

In January, 67,714 eligible refugees and asylum-seekers (37,965 families) received cash assistance in Greece, in 116 locations.
UNHCR provides cash assistance in Greece, as part of the ESTIA programme, funded by the European Commission. Cash assistance restores dignity and empowers asylum-seekers and refugees who can now choose how to cover their basic needs. It also contributes directly to the economy of the host community through the purchase of services and goods. UNHCR in Greece works with the Greece Cash Alliance partners the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), Catholic Relief Services (CRS) and METAdrasi.
PS KARAN RECEIVES FAREWELL COURTESY CALL

Permanent Secretary, Office of the Prime Minister, Immigration and Sugar Industry and Acting Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Yogesh Karan today received a farewell courtesy call from the outgoing Head of Delegation for International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) Country Cluster Delegation In The Pacific, Ms. Kathryn Clarkson, as her 5 years term concludes this month.
During a meeting held at the Office of the Prime Minister, PS Karan thanked Ms. Clarkson for her leadership role in advancing the partnership between IFRC and Fiji.
On the aspects of IFRC’s role in Humanitarian support, PS Karan thanked IFRC and International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) for working collaboratively to mobilise assistance in communities affected by TC Yasa and TC Ana. The work undertaken by the Fiji Red Cross emergency response team in this regard was also acknowledged.
US government continues to support Federation in its fight against COVID-19
United States Ambassador to Barbados, the Eastern Caribbean, and Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States, Her Excellency Linda Taglialatela.
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts United States Ambassador to Barbados, the Eastern Caribbean, and Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States, Her Excellency Linda Taglialatela, said that her government will continue to support St. Kitts and Nevis and the region in their fight against the deadly COVID-19 virus.
The latest support was the donation from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) of an ambulance to the Ministry of Health, and a passenger bus to St. Kitts and Nevis Red Cross Society (SKNRCS) that were handed over during a brief yet significant ceremony on Wednesday, February 24, at the Joseph Nathaniel France (JNF) General Hospital.
Belarus, Red Cross discuss cooperation prospects

MINSK, 26 February (BelTA) – Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus Sergei Aleinik has met with Head of the Regional Delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross to Russia, Belarus, and Moldova Ikhtiyar Aslanov, the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs told BelTA.
Sergei Aleinik and Ikhtiyar Aslanov discussed results of Belarus-ICRC cooperation in 2020 as well as this year s joint events, including regional seminars on international humanitarian law, assistance to vulnerable population strata, and the implementation of initiatives within the framework of the Commonwealth of Independent States and the Collective Security Treaty Organization.
