The brother of Syrian resident Mohammad E., who was killed by the mercenaries of the Wagner private military company, has filed an application with the Russian Investigative Committee demanding to open a criminal case against the Russians involved in his brother’s execution, reported Novaya Gazeta with reference to the complainant s lawyers.
The murder took place in 2017. Earlier, Novaya Gazeta published footage of the Wagner mercenaries with a severed head of Mohammad E. The newspaper was able to identify one of the participants in the murder - 30-year-old Stanislav Dychko, who joined the private military company in 2016. According to Novaya Gazeta, the execution took place near the Al-Shaer gas field in Syria.

The legal action against military contractor Wagner Group follows a wave of torture-related cases in Europe against officials from the Syrian regime, whose chances of winning a punishing civil war were boosted by Russia’s military intervention in 2015.

On 16 March 2021, the Gulf Centre for Human Rights (GCHR), in co-operation with its human rights partners Americans for Democracy & Human Rights in Bahrain (AHRDB), Bahrain Centre for Human Rights (BCHR), International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH), and World Organisation Against Torture (OMCT), will launch a report entitled
Patterns of Torture in Bahrain: Perpetrators must Face Justice.
Drawing on first-hand witness statements by survivors of torture, the report is a comprehensive study on the specific ways and means by which torture is perpetrated in Bahrain, with a particular focus on the period since the 2011 popular movement and the violent crackdown that followed. The report not only seeks to describe how torture in perpetrated in Bahrain, it goes one step further by examining the concrete steps that need to be taken at domestic and international level to end the culture of impunity that facilitates the use of torture and prevents accountability.

Three non-governmental organisations (NGOs) yesterday filed a landmark case in Moscow against Russia s Wagner mercenary group over the torture and murder of a detainee in Syria in 2017. This litigation is a first-ever attempt by the family of a Syrian victim to hold Russian suspects accountable for serious crimes committed in Syria, the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH), Russia s top rights group Memorial and the Syrian Centre for Media and Freedom of Expression said in a joint statement.
