Manitoba Hydro general strike over after nearly 70 days

  WINNIPEG After nearly 70 days of striking against Manitoba Hydro, the union representing some employees at the Crown corporation said the strike is over. On May 10, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local Union 2034 filed an application with the Manitoba Labour Board to settle the provisions of a new collective agreement. The union said it received a response from the labour board on May 13, ending the strike. Some Hydro employees began a rotating strike on March 9, and declared a general strike on March 23, in response to contract negotiations with the Crown corporation. IBEW 2034 told CTV News it is preparing its case for a future board ruling on the contract.

Government of Canada invests in training to help Canadians become certified in the skilled trades

Employment and Social Development Canada In order to help maintain a robust workforce and better position our country for a strong economic recovery, the Government of Canada is investing in the skilled trades to ensure that Canadians have the training they need to access good, well-paying jobs. The Government is making targeted investments, so that key groups facing barriers like women, newcomers, Indigenous people, persons with disabilities, and Black and racialized Canadians can better find work in the skilled trades through projects led by unions and their partner organizations. Today, the Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Disability Inclusion, Carla Qualtrough, announced $63.5 million, over five years, for 68 projects as part of the Union Training and Innovation Program (UTIP) 2020 call for proposals.
