Citing concerns that the city of Topeka s contract proposals would compromise public safety, increase response times and remove the presence of basic fire service, the Topeka Fire Department s union has declared a contract impasse.  “We need to focus on real issues impacting TFD and it should not take weeks or months to resolve the issues in play, let alone get responses from the City,” said Aaron Freeman, president of the International Association of Fire Fighters Local #83, in a news release.  The impasse was declared June 11 after the two sides failed to reach an agreement. May 28 was the original bargaining deadline before the city requested additional time to negotiate.
