Sir Keir Starmer ditched plans to give a peerage to a leading Sikh independence supporter amid concerns over his alleged ‘extremist’ links, it was claimed last night.
But the Labour leader is facing calls to explain his decision after friends of senior public official Dabinderjit Singh Sidhu insisted it was ‘complete nonsense’ to say he was a fanatic.
Sir Keir is also being urged to say whether he had bowed to warnings that the Indian government would be furious to see Mr Singh receive the honour.

LONDON: Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer’s office is under intense pressure from the influential British Sikh community after a key Sikh leader and human rights activist’s announcement to the UK House of Lords was delayed minutes before the official announcement.
A row has broken out over Dabinderjit Singh Sidhu, principal adviser to Sikh Federation UK, as he was to be one of the new political peers announced last Tuesday but his name was missing when the list was released by Downing Street, although leading journalists were given his name in the morning.

The United Kingdom saved itself from a potentially major diplomatic row with India after it took a Khalistani supporter off the list of House of Lords members in the last minute. Dabinderjit Singh Sidhu, who is a principal adviser to the Sikh Federation UK, was proposed as one of the nominees by the Labour party for peerage for life to the House of Lords Appointments Commission, but when the list of âPolitical Peeragesâ was released by Downing Street, his name was missing, The Hindustan Times reported.Â
