South African nurses celebrated International Nurses Day following a particularly difficult period. In Tshwane, the Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (Denosa) called on government to find clear ways to deal with disruptions to the healthcare system caused by Covid-19. Its president Simon Hlungwani said a survey by the International Council of Nurses in January found that just under 40% of the 105 countries surveyed had nurses sitting on the highest bodies dealing with the pandemic.

Health sector applauds West Moreton s nurses, midwives

To mark International Nurses Day on Wednesday and International Day of the Midwife on May 5, West Moreton Health honoured four healthcare professionals for their work. Paul D’Arcy was named Nurse of the Year for his work as a theatre scrub/scout registered nurse and clinical nurse Stephanie Harlow was named Preceptor Nurse of the Year. Ms Harlow, whose work centres around educating and mentoring, said she tailored learning and development opportunities to the needs of the individual.

National Nurses United reports more than 400 nurses died of COVID nationwide, at least 23 of them in Florida and at least 6 of the 23 from Tampa Bay. The nurses’ union held candlelight vigils in several cities, including in Tampa. The Tampa vigil was mainly virtual, with video after video of nurses reading the names of other nurses who lost their lives to the virus across the nation. It’s National Nurses Week and Wednesday marked International Nurses Day, giving even more weight to the event. A St. Pete nurse said they’ve dealt with so much during the pandemic.
