Shane Foley wins the third leg of the International Jockeys Challenge aboard Motawariyah, securing his victory
Irish star Shane Foley emerged triumphant in the second annual stc International Jockeys Challenge after taking two out of the four legs, each worth US $400,000, in the Saudi Arabian competition.
Fourteen internationally-renowned male and female jockeys from all over the globe took part but it was the Classic-winning Foley, who rides for trainer Jessica Harrington in Ireland, who took Friday night s honors with a total of 30 points for his two wins.
He said: “It s massive to win this. It s a nice break and during a quiet time for us during the winter, so it s nice to get away and get the opportunity. We have a runner tomorrow (Barbados in the Red Sea Turf Handicap), but these challenges are important for young jockeys to get noticed around the world and hopefully it might open a few doors somewhere else.

Leading Irish jockey Shane Foley claimed top honours in the stc International Jockeys Challenge in Riyadh on Friday.
Riders from all over the world jetted in to Saudi Arabia for the second running of the competition, which acts as the perfect appetiser to Saturday s high-profile card at the King Adbulaziz Racetrack, which features the $20million Saudi Cup.
Foley, who as stable jockey to Jessica Harrington has enjoyed big-race success aboard the likes of Albigna, Cadillac and Lucky Vega in the last couple of years, landed two of the four races that form the challenge, first striking gold on Emblem Star.
RIYADH: Early morning rain and grey skies slowly gave way to sunshine as the lucky few who attended the opening day of the 2021 Saudi Cup made their way to King Abdul Aziz Racecourse on the outskirts of Riyadh.
And for the second year running the International Jockeys Challenge was a worthy and exciting curtain-raiser to the world’s most valuable horse race on Saturday.
In particular, it proved memorable for overall winner Shane Foley, while Saudi jockey Adel Alfouraidi came in second, with veteran American Mike Smith third.
