The Gender Co-ordinator of the Public Utilities Workers Union (PUWU), Mrs Joyce Maku Appiah says it is important for workers and their leaders to understand issues of gender and gender based violence.
Speaking to the media at a three-day training workshop organized by PUWU for selected executives at the PUWU Hospitality and Conference Centre at Kasoa in the Central Region, Madam Maku Appiah said workers must be equipped with a better understanding of gender and skills on how to integrate the provisions of the ILO Convention 190, as a mechanism for mitigating the increasing cases of violence and harassment at work and in the community.

Taiwan has the second-largest long-distance fleet in the world, and plays a central role in the international supply chain for fisheries products.
But in recent years, its distant-water fleet has been accused of human rights offenses, tainting its reputation. According to Greenpeace and other NGOs concerned with labor issues in the global fishing industry, Taiwan’s tuna-fishing firms, and major Western buyers, aren’t doing enough to stamp out long-running abuses taking place in the Taiwanese tuna fleet.
Greenpeace has pursued a multi-year campaign to persuade FCF Co., a Taiwan-based business and the largest tuna trader in the world, to make reforms, but its progress has not been adequate, according to Greenpeace East Asia Ocean Campaign Director Pearl (Peiyu) Chen.
Belo Monte dam’s water demands imperil Amazon communities, environment

Norte Energia, the builder and operator of the controversial Belo Monte mega-dam is pushing for implementation of a much disputed “consensus hydrogram” a plan to annually manipulate water releases into the Xingu River’s Volta Grande (Big Bend), with estimated peak April releases ranging from a mere 4,000 – 8,000 m3/s.
Noting that April average historical river flows in the Volta Grande before the dam was built were 19,985 m3/s, analysts say this dearth of water flow will prevent and imperil annual fish reproduction. One Volta Grande expert estimates that, using the so-called consensus hydrogram plan, at least 80% of Volta Grande fish will die.
