Indonesia s navy has lost contact with a submarine carrying 53 sailors that was preparing for a weapons training exercise in waters north of Bali, a military spokesman said Wednesday.
The German-built KRI Nanggala-402, which went into service in the early 1980s, failed to relay results of the exercise as expected, Julius Widjojono said, according to Reuters.
Indonesia s defense ministry said that an aerial search had spotted an oil slick on the water near where the submarine is thought to have performed a dive.

JAKARTA, April 21 (Xinhua) Indonesia s Defense Ministry has deployed warship Rigel and mine-sweeper Rengat to search for the Nanggala-402 submarine which lost contact with the navy during a strategic weapons firing exercise in Bali Strait waters in the early hours of Wednesday, according to an official source. The Indonesian Navy has also sent distress to the International Submarine Escape and Rescue Liaison officer, said the Ministry s Public Relations Bureau in a press release.
So far, Singapore, Australian and Indian navies said they were ready to help, the bureau added.

A search for 53 people is underway after a submarine suddenly disappeared off the coast of Bali, the Indonesian Navy has confirmed.
The submarine failed to report back with results of a training exercise while in waters in North Bali on Wednesday.
Navy spokesman First Admiral Julius Widjojono said it had been taking part in a torpedo drill, but failed to relay results from the exercise as expected.
The KRI Nanggala 402 submarine was built in Germany in 1981, and the 60m vessel has a cruising speed of 21.5 knots.
