Michigan residents receiving unemployment benefits will soon have to prove that they re actively searching for work.
Claimants will have to contact a minimum of two employers every week and report those actions weekly to Michigan s Unemployment Insurance Agency by the end of May, Stephanie Glidden, chief of staff for the agency, said Tuesday at a Michigan House Oversight Committee hearing.
The requirement has long been a condition of receiving jobless benefits, but was waived at the beginning of the pandemic through an executive order by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer when businesses across the state shut down. When Whitmer s powers were invalidated near the end of last year, that provision technically went back into effect but wasn t enforced by the agency.
Although job growth is expected to build in the coming months thanks to vaccinations and another round of stimulus via Biden’s “Build Back Better” proposal, economists say that it may take several years for the labor market to heal. So far, the economy has recouped 13.9 million, or 62%, of the 22.4 million jobs lost in the pandemic recession.
“We need to look at the economy as a whole regarding whether there needs to be another round of direct payments,” says Elaine Maag, a principal research associate in the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center at the Urban Institute. “Are we recovered? Are people still hurting? There’s some evidence that we’re not out of the woods yet.”
