April 15, 2021 – The Labor Department reported this morning that 576,000 Americans filed new claims for state unemployment benefits. This is the lowest level for initial claims since March 14, 2020 when it was 256,000. The previous week’s level was revised up by 25,000 from 744,000 to 769,000. Economists surveyed by Bloomberg expected 700,000 filings. Since last February, the United States has lost over 10 million jobs. (Shutterstock) MARYLAND Another 10,314 Marylanders sought jobless benefits for the first time last week, the state s labor department reported Thursday. The latest figure, which covers the week ending April 10, represents a 7.3 percent increase from the 9,612 initial unemployment claims that were filed the prior week. It also pushes the total number of filings since March 2020 to more than 1.78 million. While the number of initial filings has dropped substantially from its peak in May 2020, it is still high by historical standards. Subscribe

State reports more than 1 1M unemployment claims since mid-March 2020

Shutterstock.com The Colorado Department of Labor and Employment reported April 15 that an estimated 8,927 regular initial unemployment claims were filed the week ending April 10, according to a news release issued by the department, adding were also 2,132 Pandemic Unemployment Assistance initial claims filed for the same week. Since mid-March 2020, an estimated total of 909,661 regular initial unemployment claims have been filed and a grand total of 1,175,514 claims, when the PUA program is included.   The state s unemployment rate has steadily declined since December 2020, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and was at 6.6 percent in February, the bureau s most recent numbers.
