Employment Security Department Commissioner, Suzi LeVine, released this statement on Monday, following the new federal stimulus measure being signed into law by President Trump on Sunday evening:
“We are grateful for this much-needed relief for the hundreds of thousands of unemployed Washingtonians who have been impacted by the COVID-19 crisis, especially those who were facing the loss of Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) benefits this week.
“With the hard work the team has been doing in anticipation of this legislation, we will be able to update our systems in time to ensure that most claimants receiving PUA and Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC) will not experience any gap in their benefits. However, we are still awaiting the necessary guidance from the United States Department of Labor (USDOL) to fully implement this new law. CHARLESTON Gov. Jim Justice praised Monday the signing of a $900 billion coronavirus relief package that also extends the use of previous federal dollars for COVID-19 expenses.
“Thank goodness we passed something,” Justice said. “We have too many people and too many businesses that are really hurting.”
Congress passed a $2.4 trillion omnibus bill Dec. 21 to keep the government funded through the fiscal year, with a $900 billion new coronavirus relief package. Despite releasing a video on social media last week criticizing the two bills, President Donald Trump finally signed both bills Sunday night.

The $900 billion in COVID relief signed into law by President Donald Trump on Sunday is needed but doesn t go nearly far enough, Gov. Tom Wolf said Monday.
âMore needs to be done to truly foster a sustained economic recovery, Wolf said. The people and businesses hit hardest by this pandemic continue to struggle â including people who are unemployed, restaurant and bar owners and frontline workers. State and local governments are also desperately in need of aid to ensure that we can continue to provide the services our residents need.
