Continuing-claims data, which lags initial claims by a week and accounts for people who filed for benefits for at least two weeks, also fell. There were 5.3 million people filing continuing claims for the week ended Dec. 12, down from 5.5 million in the previous week. While the drop in claims is a welcome sign for a recovering economy, initial claims figures are still well above the pre-pandemic high of 695,000, reached in 1982. At this time last year, data showed there were 218,000 people filing initial claims and 1.7 million filing continuing claims. The number of people filing for benefits under programs initiated during the pandemic was little changed, Labor Department figures showed. The data lags initial claims figures by two weeks.
