Congressional leaders on Sunday reached a deal on a roughly $900 billion coronavirus relief package after a half-year of stalemate, securing another tranche of aid as a surge in COVID-19 infections threatens to further derail the nation s sputtering economy.
If passed by the House and Senate on Monday as expected, the legislation would extend aid to millions of Americans still reeling from the pandemic by providing a fresh round of stimulus checks, enhanced unemployment benefits and money for small businesses, as well as new funding for struggling industries, tax breaks, vaccine distribution and education and health care.
The measure will help Americans in the near term, but it stops short of mitigating the economic fallout that households have endured during the pandemic, some economists and unemployment experts say. The final bill provides five fewer weeks of unemployment benefits than the compromise reached by a bipartisan group of senators earlier this month.
The measure was tied to a $1.4 trillion spending bill to fund federal agencies and programs through Sept. 30, the end of the fiscal year.
The Senate resoundingly passed the package late Monday, sending the bill to Trump to sign.

President Donald Trump on Sunday night signed an economic relief package that will provide a round of $600 stimulus payments to most Americans and partly restore the enhanced federal unemployment benefit, offering $300 for at least 10 weeks. The agreement also contains provisions related to student loans, rental assistance, and medical bills.
