(Jeff Chiu/AP File) Almost 31,000 Massachusetts residents applied for first-time unemployment benefits last week, down by almost 4,000 from the week prior, according to the latest federal data. The data includes both traditional filings as well as those made by self-employed workers and so-called gig workers, under the federal Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program. That comes among national unemployment numbers rising during the same period. The number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits last week was 885,000, the highest weekly total since September, as a resurgence of coronavirus cases threatens the economy s recovery from its springtime collapse.

Nearly 8million Americans have fallen into poverty since JUNE

US poverty rose to 11.7% from June to November - an increase of 7.8M people A recent study showed a surge in poverty rates within the five-month period after unemployment benefits expired Adding to the spike are the millions of jobs lost since the start of the pandemic, during which more than 86 million people filed claims for unemployment The pressure for a COVID relief package has intensified as pandemic-related payments and protections will expire at the end of the year
