Huh) (CN) The number of Americans applying for unemployment insurance benefits surpassed 1 million last week for the first time since August, according to the Department of Labor’s weekly report. As of last week, states reported dolling out jobless benefits to 5.8 million people roughly 4.1% of the nation’s 142 million workers eligible to receive benefits. During the week of Dec. 26, 18.4 million Americans filed claims to continue receiving benefits, including 7.4 million Americans on Pandemic Unemployment Assistance benefits and 4.1 million receiving Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation. These programs cover gig and part-time workers who aren’t normally eligible for unemployment insurance.

The Texas workforce commission says they have started procession over 1 million active claims. For those who are under the pandemic Unemployment Assistance program and had already exhausted their benefits, the extension will renew for another 11 weeks. Similarly, for those under the Pandemic Emergency Unemployment compensation program, payment will be extended until that March 13th date or up to 24 total weeks, again whichever comes first.

From Staff Reports Jan 6, 2021 The Department of Labor has issued guidelines to assist the Texas Workforce Commission in the implementation of the Continued Assistance for Unemployed Workers Act of 2020. Payments under this legislation are authorized for the payment week ending Jan. 2, 2021. The act will provide up to 11 additional benefit weeks to Texans on Pandemic Unemployment Assistance and Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation. CAA extends the unemployment benefits claim programs created under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act. Key provisions of the act include: The Dec 26, 2020 deadline for expiration of CARES Act benefits has been extended to March 13, 2021. The legislation includes an extra $300 per week for eligible claimants who are unemployed and receiving benefits during the covered weeks.
