Grocery stores in Texas are preparing for a big week. More than $2 billion in pandemic food benefits for Texas families with kids in school will get loaded onto Lone Star Cards this week, starting Monday. It will start Monday night, and it will be about $300 million loaded onto Lone Star Cards per night the balance of the month. And that will be large business for our supermarkets, said Gary Huddleston, a grocery industry consultant with the Texas Retailers Association. We ve been preparing for this in our supermarkets and ordering more product, beefing up staffing because this will be, in the state of Texas, big business for our supermarkets and benefits for the families.

Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer is based on how many days of school students were in remote learning and is similar to SNAP benefits. People can get more information at hhs.texas.gov/pebt.

Gov. Abbott Announces Additional Food Benefits for Children
AUSTIN, TX – Governor Greg Abbott Thursday announced that the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) has received approval from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for a second round of federal Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer (P-EBT) food benefits for families with children who have temporarily lost access to free or reduced-price school meals due to COVID-19 during the 2020-2021 school year.
P-EBT provides a benefit of up to $1,200 per child for the school year. The amount of the benefit is based on the school the child attends and is determined by the number of days that most students at that school received remote instruction during the 2020-2021 school year. P-EBT benefits can be used in the same way as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) food benefits to pay for groceries.
