USDA Moves To Feed Millions Of Children Over The Summer
at 12:30 pm NPR
The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced a new effort Monday to feed millions of children this summer, when free school meals traditionally reach just a small minority of the kids who rely on them the rest of the year. The move expands what s known as the Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer, or P-EBT, program into the summer months, and USDA estimates it will reach more than 30 million children. If children and children s learning and children s health is a priority for us in this country, then we need to fund our priorities, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said in a Monday interview with NPR s All Things Considered. I think it s an important day.

USDA announced that the agency will be allowing states to provide the Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer (P-EBT benefits) to low-income families through the summer.
The P-EBT program gives funding to families whose children qualify for free or reduced-price meals while schools are operating remotely. Until now, the program has only been active during the school year.
Funding for the expanded P-EBT program has been provided through the American Rescue Plan. According to USDA, the program will give $375 to each of 30 million children to help their families buy food this summer.
Joel Berg, CEO of Hunger Free America said, “expanding the Pandemic-EBT program to the summer is a wise and compassionate decision. It will ease child hunger, reduce the financial burden on parents, and create jobs in grocery stores.”
Many children in the Valley have depended on free meals from their schools during the pandemic.
But as the school year comes to a close, some children have no access to daily meals.
That’s why the U.S. Department of Agriculture will be giving nutritional subsidies to more than 30 million U.S. children during the summer months using funds from the American Rescue Plan.
