Author: Paul Murphy / Eyewitness News Published: 6:05 PM CDT May 11, 2021 Updated: 6:53 PM CDT May 11, 2021 NEW ORLEANS Mississippi and Alabama are joining a growing number of states that plan to withdraw from expanded federal unemployment benefits.  Republican governors in those states claim the jobless assistance makes it too easy for people not to return to work.  Dot’s Diner was open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week before the Coronavirus pandemic.  Now owner Larry Katz says he can barely find enough workers to keep his four New Orleans area restaurants open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The governors of Montana, South Carolina, and Arkansas have rejected the increased pandemic unemployment benefits. They say it’s creating perverse incentives for people not to return to work. According to CBS News, other states are pondering similar measures in light of Friday’s report from the Department of Labor showing that the economy added 266,000 jobs in April, far fewer than the one million experts expected On Sunday, Utah Governor Spencer Cox told CNN he thinks exiting pandemic-related unemployment benefits is a good idea, arguing the recent lower-than-expected jobs report is “what happens when we pay people not to work.”

Statewide task force continues to root out fraud in California s unemployment system

As part of the ongoing effort to protect Californians from fraud and ensure the integrity of the state unemployment system, the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) in partnership with California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR), the California Employment Development Department (EDD), and the State’s Districts Attorneys, the US Attorney’s Office announced additional progress by a state-led task force on investigations and interdiction efforts and has instituted new safeguards to protect Californians from fraud. Since being established in November by Governor Gavin Newsom, the California Task Force on Pandemic Unemployment Assistance Fraud has led to the arrest of 68 individuals and opened 1,641 additional cases.
