MEMBERS OF THE public are having their PPS numbers stolen to facilitate pandemic payment fraud, it has emerged.
The Department of Social Protection (DSP) confirmed that gardaí seconded to its department are working on cases of fraud which amount to nearly €200k being stolen from the State.
Several places of employment have been affected by the scam with some victims only realising what has happened when they viewed their latest tax certificates from Revenue.
Last week, the Sisters of Charity â which ran St Patrickâs Guild â said it was âdeeply saddenedâ by disclosures in the RTÃ Investigates programme on illegal adoptions.
The religious order called for âa full and comprehensive Government inquiry into adoption practices in the State since 1922â.
A statement added: âSt Patrickâs Guild clearly played a role in what happened over many decades. We deeply regret the hurt and harm caused and hope that a full review will give the answers that are clearly needed.â
Mr OâGorman is separately expected to seek approval for plans to bring in an extra three weeks of paid parentâs leave from next month.
