North Carolina bid for 2027 Summer World University Games gets national backing

Wednesday, 17 February 2021 The United States International University Sports Federation (USIUSF) has endorsed a bid to stage the 2027 Summer World University Games in North Carolina. A formal letter of intent was sent the International University Sports Federation (FISU) yesterday, with the Triangle region the proposed location for the Games. The Triangle region includes two of the state s four most populous cities - Raleigh and Durham - as well as three major universities; the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Duke University and North Carolina State University.  We have been delighted with both the interest that the Raleigh-Durham market has shown in hosting the Summer World University Games, and the significant assets and experience the North Carolina Bid Committee brings to the table, said USIUSF secretary general and FISU Executive Committee member Delise O’Meally.

Northeastern University to represent US in ice hockey contests at Lucerne 2021 Tuesday, 16 February 2021 Northeastern University has been selected to represent the United States in the men and women s ice hockey contests at the Lucerne 2021 Winter Universiade.  Northeastern University director of athletics and recreation Jeff Konya announced the news.  This opportunity speaks to the success of Northeastern as a global university and the Huskies brand, he said.  This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our student-athletes to represent the red, white and blue, while also creating a global experience for both the men s and women s hockey programmes.  We are thankful for being the first university selected to have both hockey programmes represent Team USA.

Egypt awarded 2022 World University Squash Championships Friday, 5 February 2021 New Giza, in Egypt, has been awarded the 2022 World University Squash Championships - the normally biennial International University Sports Federation (FISU) event is scheduled for June 27 to July 3. Shanghai was due to host the event last year but it was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. At the last hosting in Birmingham in 2018, the team title went to hosts Britain, while English duo Joshua Masters and Lily Taylor won the respective individual men’s and women’s titles. Britain, hosts of the last FISU World Championship Squash event in 2018, won the team title and will defend it in New Giza in 2022 ©FISU

Skier Zenhäusern excited to see Lucerne 2021 bring skiing back to its roots Tuesday, 19 January 2021 Swiss skier Ramon Zenhäusern has stated he is excited to see Alpine skiing return to its roots at the International University Sports Federation (FISU) Lucerne 2021 Winter Universiade, in his home country. Speaking in an interview as part of the FISU Legends series, the 2015 Universiade winner said he was looking forward to seeing a Universiade in Switzerland, particularly in his sport. He is an ambassador for Lucerne 2021, stating his support for the event and the organisers. I hope it will be a nice Games and I ll maybe come to the event and see some competitions, said Zenhäusern.

Former FISU athlete becomes sports director of University of Chile Thursday, 14 January 2021 Former Chilean table tennis player Blanca Durán, who competed at two editions of the International University Sports Federation (FISU) World University Games, has been appointed sports director of the University of Chile. Her appointment makes Durán one of the few female sports directors in the country. Speaking about the COVID-19 pandemic, she said that going forward it was necessary to move towards in-person activities, both physical activity and competition, within the possibilities that the pandemic allows us . Durán was the youngest adult national champion of table tennis at just 15 years old, before representing her country at the 2015 and 2017 editions of the FISU Summer Universiade in Gwangju and Taipei.
