It is my pleasure to welcome both our in-person and virtual audience to the 15th Annual Secretary of State’s International Women of Courage Awards.
We are delighted to join you today on International Women’s Day. Since 2007, the U.S. has marked this day by recognizing women who have exemplified exceptional courage and leadership, advocating for human rights, women’s equality, and social progress, often at great personal risk to themselves and their families.

Colombo (News 1st); First Lady of the United States Dr. Jill Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken honored Ranitha Gnanarajah as an International Women of Courage (IWOC) award winner for her commitment to justice, accountability, and women’s rights in Sri Lanka.
A lawyer, Ms. Gnanarajah advocates for Sri Lanka’s most vulnerable populations, including families affected by enforced disappearances, survivors of gender-based violence, and religious and ethnic minorities.
The Secretary of State’s IWOC award was established in 2007 to commend women around the globe who demonstrate exceptional bravery and leadership in advocating for peace, human rights, and women’s empowerment.

The U.S. Government provided over $341 million in U.S. assistance to Zimbabweans in calendar year 2020. The funds included over $200 million for health, with $163 million for PEPFAR’s HIV/AIDS programs alone, $80 million in emergency assistance, $26 million for resilience programs, and $12 million to promote agriculture economic growth. We have provided over $3.5 billion in assistance to Zimbabwe since 1980.
Health
The U.S. Government remains the largest overall bilateral donor to Zimbabwe and provides the most support to the country’s health sector. Assistance concentrates on the prevention and treatment of three of the most significant health threats in Zimbabwe HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria to help Zimbabweans live longer and healthier lives. HCC leadership program staff participates in discussion

FREEPORT Dan Dick, the coordinator of High School Servant Leadership at Highland Community College, recently participated in a roundtable discussion with the San Antonio Youth Commission and six virtual visitors from Pakistan.
The discussion centered around how best to reach high school youth for local leadership.
The program was locally coordinated by Brendan Dutmer of the Freeport Area International Visitors Council as a part of the Global Ties program with the U.S. State Department. Dutmer is also dean of natural science and mathematics at HCC.
Global Ties is a nonprofit partner of the U.S. Department of State, sustaining a network that coordinates international exchange programs. The Freeport Area International Visitors Council is a community-based-member that locally implements the International Visitor Leadership Program.
