Chinese leader Xi Jinping has made a rare visit to Tibet as authorities tighten controls over the Himalayan region’s traditional Buddhist culture, accompanied by an accelerated drive for economic development and modernised infrastructure. State media reported Friday (local time) that Xi visited sites in the capital, Lhasa, including the Drepung Monastery, Barkhor Street and the public square at the base of the Potala Palace that was home to the Dalai Lamas, Tibet’s traditional spiritual and temporal leaders. Xi s visit was previously unannounced publicly, and it wasn t clear whether he had already returned to Beijing.

China has in recent years stepped up controls over Buddhist monasteries and expanded education in the Chinese rather than Tibetan language. Critics of such policies are routinely detained and can receive long prison terms, especially if they have been convicted of association with the 86-year-old Dalai Lama, who has lived in exile in India since fleeing Tibet

Xi Jinping is currently on a visit to Tibet, the first by a Chinese president to be on top of the world in 31 years. The strongman from Beijing arrived Wednesday in the locality of Nyingchi, in the south-eastern part of the autonomous region, the New China agency announced on Friday, 48 hours late. His visit coincides with the 70th anniversary of the invasion of Tibet by Communist troops, an event celebrated in Beijing as “peaceful liberation”.
A sign of the region’s political sensitivity, only one sitting Chinese president has visited Tibet since the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949: Jiang Zemin in July 1990. Of course, Xi Jinping had already visited Tibet. in July 2011, but he was then vice president of China.

BEIJING, July 23 President Xi Jinping is on a rare trip to China’s politically sensitive region of Tibet, state media reported today, the first such visit by the country’s top leader in more than three decades.
Tibet has alternated over the centuries between independence and control by China, which says it “peacefully liberated” the rugged plateau in 1951 and brought infrastructure and education to the previously underdeveloped region.
